University of Tasmania (UTAS) Graduation Gowns Graduations
The Univeristy of Tasmania outsources its regalia management to an external company, Compass Group, who serve students at Hobart, Launceston and Burnie venues. Gown rental costs $120 and late fees are charged if items are not returned after the ceremony.
With Churchill Gowns, you can buy your new UTAS Gown Set for as little as $99, or hire it for as little as $75. All hired items can be kept for 3 days, giving you plenty of time to get that perfect photo.
History of Academic Dress
The University of Tasmania academic dress is based upon the Oxford style of dress, originally designed for use at the University of Oxford in the UK and dating back to the 12th or 13th century.
Once worn daily at ancient universities in the UK, academic dress is thought to have been originally designed to prevent anyone from differentiating between the rich gentry and commoner students based upon their clothing, helping all students attending the university feel equal. Gowns were originally more similar to overcoats, and were closed at the front - a feature now seen in American, but not Australian gowns. Today, UTas reserves the use of academic dress solely for use at graduations and other ceremonies.
Gown Regulations at UTAS
UTas gowns are based on those worn at the University of Oxford. All bachelor graduates should not put their arms through the sleeve slits, but instead through the open sleeve ends, while masters graduates use the slits. The sleeve of a bachelor gown hangs down to your waist, while masters gowns have longer sleeves that end around the calf, with closed, crescent shaped ends.
PhD gowns at Utas are identical to masters gown, with scarlet satin lapels (front facings), and are accompanied by a unique PhD bonnet and hood.
Mortarboard Regulations at UTAS
Matte-black mortarboards are required to be worn by all Bachelor and Masters graduates at the University, and must be made from either wool, felt, or a blend of the two materials. PhD graduates wear bonnets made from velvet.
Mortarboards are designed with an unfixed black tassel, which is moved from the left to the right when receiving your diploma. We are proud to be the official supplier to universities around Australia of our uniquely design flexible-fit mortarboards, made with a foam-laminate cup, allowing the mortarboards to be flat-packed for storage, and spring into shape when removed from the packaging. We are also the only supplier to manufacture flexibly sized bonnets, that prevent them from slipping down over the graduates head - a common issue.
Hood Regulations at UTAS
The University of Tasmania hoods are modelled after the Bachelor of Arts hood from Oxford University. Colours are differentiated hoods by faculty, and sometimes degree within the faculty, resulting in about 20 different styles and colours of hood throughout the whole university.
We provide a large range of hoods for UTas bachelor, masters and PhD graduates. Please see below for a list of colours used for each degree, or take a look at the full university regulations.

We work hard to ensure that our hoods precisely match university regulations and those manufactured by other suppliers. Fabrics are custom dyed to match university colours and we use a broad variety of fabric finishes and weights so our customers blend in seamlessly.

Our gowns are made from a high quality 70% recycled polyester and viscose weave, and are finished in a stylish matte black, conforming to the highest standards of traditional Cambridge style academic dress. The yoke of our gowns is tightly pleated and perfectly spaced.

Our mortarboards are made from a soft black felt material with a ribbon finish arround the base of the cap. A flexible cap and 'secure fit' elastic inside the headband ensure all of our mortarboards are a comfortable fit and stay in place on your graduation day.
